Big Ideas I'm Working to Learn in Science:
I will use this page to reflect on all that I am learning about science and the world around me. Specifically, I will be working to answer the essential questions that we are studying in science class over the next few years. Those essential questions are linked below.
Sixth Grade Science Essential Questions
One of the big ideas that we have been studying this year is the notion that everything in nature is designed to help a plant or an animal to survive, thrive and reproduce. I really like that idea because it makes me wonder every time that I am looking at a plant or an animal outside. For example, some trees have limbs only at the very top of the tree while others have limbs that stretch from the top to the bottom. There HAS to be a reason for that -- and I like trying to figure out what that reason is.
That concept is called natural selection -- and it is the idea that nature "chooses" which plants and animals are going to survive and thrive because they have the right traits for the conditions that they live in.
